Howlin’ Wolf, The Howlin’ Wolf Album (1969).
In 1969 Chess Records was looking to capitalize on the success of Jimi Hendrix and his blues sound. They forced Howlin’ Wolf into making two albums mimicking the sound. This album features many of Howlin’ Wolf’s classic hits recorded in that style. He hated them. According to Pete Cosey, a guitarist on the session, Howlin’ Wolf refused to call it blues music saying, ” Why don’t you take them wah-wahs and all that other shit and go throw it off in the lake?”. He referred to the album as “Dog Shit”. Howlin’ Wolf was the man.
